A Wander Through the History and Unique Flora and Fauna of Wild Tasmania, presented by Marianne Douglas, Ph.D. This presentation will provide a brief history and cultural background of Tasmania, including aboriginal history and European settlement. We will explore some of the wild areas that remain virtually untouched with its unique flora and fauna. Because Tasmania has been an island for a very long time, relatively few predators have been introduced and now forms a refuge for many animal species such as the Tasmanian devil. The plant diversity in Tasmania is also remarkable and includes some of the most ancient plant species on earth, the tallest flowering trees, the oldest plant clones and a high proportion of endemic species. Marianne was born in Rotterdam and studied at the Agricultural University of Wageningen, The Netherlands, where she obtained her Master’s degree in Biology, majoring in immunology and fish health. All presentations will be held via Zoom.
