The late Victorians and the Edwardians lived through what is known as a domestic revolution. The middle classes – whose incomes rose as mass production capabilities increased, caused the cost of life’s necessities to drop substantially which allowed them to be able to spend more money on luxuries than ever before. The items they purchased were designed to make their homes more comfortable and stylish. Unfortunately, many of the products that were invented and purchased posed severe health hazards and in some cases, death.
In this history talk we will discuss some of the dangerous things found in the Victorian and Edwardian era homes. Were any of these found in the Pattison’s home called Fairlawn? The Pattison’s were way beyond the middle-class life style. Did that make them even more susceptible to these hidden dangers? Light refreshments will be served. Admission is $10. Tickets may be purchased online at www.superiorpublicmuseums.org.
